How Legacies of Geopolitical Trauma Shape Popular Nationalism Today

Geopolitical competition and conflict play a central role in canonical accounts of the emergence nation-states national identities. Yet work this tradition has paid little attention to variation everyday, popular understandings nationhood. We propose macro-historical argument explain cross-national types nationalism expressed at individual level. Our analysis builds on recent advances measurement recently introduced geopolitical threat scale (Hiers, Soehl, Wimmer 2017). With use latent class series regression models, we show that turbulent past decreases prevalence liberal (pride institutions, inclusive boundaries) while increasing restrictive (less pride exclusive across 43 countries around world. Additional analyses suggest long-term development institutions is key mediating variable: states with less traumatic history tend have more established democratic which turn foster forms nationalism.
